Front Royal lost one of its best known and best loved citizens Friday morning, January 21, when Mark Bird Turner died of a heart attack an hour after entering Warren Memorial Hospital. A life long resident of the community, Mr. Turner was born 74 years ago on the site of the present Front Royal Elementary School, and was the son of the late Hon. S.S. Turner and Mary Bird Turner. He attended Holcombe School, graduated from Randolph-Macon Academy at the end of its fourth term, and at the age of 18 graduated as an electrical engineer from the Bliss Electrical School of Washington, D.C. Mr. Turner, having to remain at home because of illness in the family, was first employed by Scharfman and Co., druggists, which business he later purchased in conjunction with the late Dr. Dan Turner and the late Henry Trout. This business was operated successfully for many years under the name of Trout and Turner, and Mr. Turner became a registered pharmacist. Some years later, he and Dr. Dan Turner sold their interests to Mr. Trout, after which he became affiliated with the Bank of Warren where he served progressively as assistant cashier, cashier, executive vice president. After 26 years, Mr. Turner resigned from the bank in 1947. Very shortly thereafter he returned to pharmacy and took a position with Trout Drug Co., where he remained until the time of his death. Mr. Turner was a devoted member of the Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the Masonic Order; past president of the Front Royal-Riverton Chamber of Commerce; past president of the Rotary Club; and served for some years as a director of the Old-Virginia Packing Co. In the early 1930s, he married Mrs. Laura West, who died in 1947. In 1949, Mr. Turner married Mrs. Edith Pence, who survives, along with two nephews, John S. Browning of Flint Hill, and Robert T. Browning of Verona, N.J. The Rev. Oren Moore conducted services for Mr. Turner Sunday afternoon at 2:30 from the Presbyterian Church. The Masonic Order held graveside services and interment was at Prospect Hill Cemetery. [Unknown Source, submitted by Sheryl Kelso (#47774940)]
