Husband of Frances Elizabeth Byrd Black.

George Washington Black was appointed Geneva County Sheriff by Governor Johnson he served in that capacity until resigning in 1904, He also served as a Deputy U S Marshal during the Cleveland Administration. George had a large farm around the present town of Black, Alabama ( the town was named for him). He had the first Cane mill in the state modeled after a syrup mill in Cairo, Georgia, the mill produced 6000 gallons of syrup from 50 acres of cane, syrup in 1905 sold for 40 cents per Gallon.
