Almost a Civil War veteran, he was drafted in York County November 9, 1862, mustered into federal service in York November 11 as a private with Co. C, 166th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), but convinced - and paid - Francis Hehaim to serve in his place and returned to civilian life just days after mustering. Mehaim deserted with a few days of taking Samuel's money.
He married Lydia Amelia Haar and fathered Samuel (b. 01/30/68, d. 09/14/73), Jesse (b @1873), and Anna Mary (b. 01/23/75 - married Harry W. Sunday). He died at his daughter Anna Mary's home from a "paralytic stroke."
