Pepper learned to understand "treat", "papa", "go", "out", "good", "bad", "birdie", "hedgehog", "bunny", "ready", "Carol", "Tommy" (Tommy Wolfe's page) and "Grandmama's". So he was very smart.

His nicknames were "tooky", "pooh dog", "crazy pepper yates" and sometimes just "pup".

He loved to eat popcorn, graham crackers, "Carol's" cornbread, and sometimes "Tommy" would give him chips and salsa.

Pepper's special friends were Grits, Snowboy, Levi Beard and, of course, Roxie Claire. (Roxie's Page)

His not-so-special friend was Dixie Lynn Tedford.

An interesting moment we had was when we were coming home for Thanksgiving when "Tommy" was sick and two of my tires went flat at the same time. I sat outside NTB in the cold while the tires were put on with Pepper and Roxie under my jacket because they couldn't go inside.

Pepper also jumped out of the car window in downtown Memphis to chase a squirrel.

Pepper had many ailments. He had a problem with itchy skin, sometimes his tear ducts clogged, he was always 10 lbs. or more overweight, he developed a lick spot on his paw, he had kidney stone surgery in 1998, he had hip dysplasia and he was diagnosed with spinal cancer in 1999.

He and Roxie Claire enjoyed staying at Grandmama's when "Tommy" was sick. The Lowes spoiled them rotten. (Hal and C. Lowe's pages)

Even though he was grumpy, he was always the man of the house. He will always be my "puppy love".
