John Carroll was the son of Jacob Carroll and Mary Bartmess and the husband of Lydia Shanck. John's family suffered financial hardship when John was young. His father was crippled from an accident and died when John was just 12. However, the family's fortunes improved as John and his older brothers took over managing the farm. In C. Volney Dorsey's 'The History of Miami County, Ohio,' 1880, p 806, John Carroll is described as follows: "JOHN CARROLL, farmer...his parents, Jacob and Mary Carroll, were born in Maryland, in which State they were married, then removed to Ohio, and settled on land near Union, Montgomery Co., on which they remained some years; but, meeting with an accident which crippled him (Jacob) much of his hard-earned money was consumed; in 1833, he (Jacob) came to Miami Co., and settled on the place he now resides...(John) owns 107 acres of land in a good state of cultivation and his improvements are far superior to ordinary farm buildings; his large house and barn with delightful surroundings, make his the most desirable and pleasant place on the west side of the township...His grandfather, Charles Carroll, was of Irish birth, and a Revolutionary soldier, serving during the war; he (Charles) died where our subject (John) now lives; his grandmother (Magdalene, w of Charles) was of German extraction..."
Grandparent:
Charles Carroll

Note:
Another researcher claims that his relative John Carroll was the son of this John Carroll. That is incorrect. My grandfather knew his father, Harley, and his aunt Lola. Many sources show that John and wife Lydia had only two children, Harley and Lola.
