Capt Lewis was killed when U.S. Army Air Corps B-17F Flying Fortress #42-6031 collided mid air with B-17F #42-4621 over the Gulf of Mexico, 45 miles southeast of Galveston, Texas, while on a training flight out of the Alexandria, Louisiana, Army Airfield. Twenty-one other Army service members also perished.

He enlisted in the Air Corps of the Regular Army on Oct. 12, 1940 in Fort Worth, Tarrant Co., Texas. Captain Henry A. Lewis died in a B-17F bomber accident over the Gulf of Mexico-about 40 miles southeast of Galveston, Texas. There were 2 planes in the accident. It is not known which plane Captain Henry Lewis was in. The planes were a Boeing 17-17-F 27 BO fortress Reg # 41-24621 c/c/msn:3306 which had 11 occupants & 11 fatalities. It was damaged beyond repair. The other plane was a Lockheed/Vega B-17F 45-VE Fortress. reg. # 42-6031 c/n/msn: 6327 with 11 occupants & 11 fatalities. It also was damaged beyond repair.

All information on this Memorial, except for the list of other victims of the 2 planes crashing together was originally researched & added to this Memorial by P Lewis Barker in June 2012. P Lewis Barker went to Rose Hill cemetery in Handley, Tarrant Co., Texas in June of 2012 & took the photos of her Lewis relatives that have been posted on their Memorial pages.
