SHOT FIVE TIMES
Tragedy Results from a Trivial Barter in Navarro County.

Corsicana, Tex., Aug. 20 - At Blooming Grove, sixteen miles west of this city, yesterday afternoon, H.T. Shipley, a blacksmith of that place, was shot five times with a revolver and instantly killed, dying without speaking a word. Shipley and others were in front of a livery stable talking at the time, Shipley talking to a man named Mitchell about the size of Shipley, Mitchell saying," You are not as thick as a blueback spellingbook."

"No, said Shipley," but I am from Arkansas, and it takes a hard man to ride me."

This conversation was friendly. The words had hardly been spoken by Shipley when shooting began, Shipley being shot five times as stated.

Immediately after the shooting James McCann, night watchman at the cotton oilmill, surrendered himself to officers and last night was brought to Corsicana in a hack and lodged in the county jail. His examining trial has been set for tomorrow. Both Shipley and McCann were members of the same fraternity and belonged to the same lodge.

NOTE: James McCann was later found not guilty for the murder of Henry T. "Tom" Shipley.
