Our 5th Cat

Ginger was a dark pure orange female cat with dark golden eyes to match her fur. Female ginger cats are rare. Ninety seven percent of the ginger cats are male. My daughter was lucky to find a female. Like a human red head who has a temper, Ginger was very territorial and went after every thing that moved. She hated cats. But was fine when she was the lone animal in the house. She had to share our house with four other cats at one point and a feral male cat from outside who came inside but Ginger made sure they knew she was the BOSS. It was comical when she bossed Gilbert around who was twice her size. Ginger loved male humans and was not too cool with the female humans. But towards her end, she followed me around which was very unusual and knew something was wrong.

My daughter bought Ginger for her 2 year old son, Peter, back in 2008. Like my son Steven, Peter was very gentle with animals. Ginger always stayed with Peter and any male that came over. She was always shy around people until she got to know you. Even as a kitten Ginger went to the males and tolerated the females. Any animal in the house she would fight. She was sort of mean spirited in a way but then gentle the other times.

When I lost Misty and Sheba within a month of each other in 2013, our hearts were broken. I tried looking for a adult cat in pet stores but nothing appealed to me. My daughter brought her Himalayan cat, Simon, over our house on February 13, 2013 when he became sick, Ginger came with him for company and to get away from Abby their other cat for rest. Ginger never went home after that and stayed with us. Simon went on home and my two senior cats were dying. Ginger was kept there to comfort us. She attached herself to my husband and son but not me. I was only there to feed her, clean the litter and once in awhile she'll let me pet her.

Early Wednesday morning, October 28, 2022, around 1 a.m. Ginger followed me around and looked up at me with very sad eyes. She was breathing very heavy and panting. I became alarmed and stay up with her. Ginger went down the basement and when she didn't come back up, I went to look for her. She was in the long cat tube (she never went in there before) and I snapped a picture. Tried to coach her out but she wasn't moving. I finally got her back upstairs and she laid down by the water and took a very long drink. She never did that either. Ginger always used her front paw to scoop up the water to her mouth. That was the last time she ate or drank anything which was around 2 a.m. Ginger went back downstairs in the basement and was inside the large cat cube we have there. I left her there and went to bed. I got up at 9 a.m. and asked my husband where's Ginger. She was about two feet away from him. She was still breathing heavily and purring. I tried to get her to eat or drink but she did take the cat treats given to her. Then jumped on the sofa and stayed there all day. My husband kept telling me she's fine but I knew she wasn't. It came on so fast. By dinnertime I saw no improvement and called my friend. We decided to take Ginger to the ER veterinary in Levittown Pa. I got the cat carrier and lined it with a clean towel. Ginger went right inside it. I snapped the last picture of her. She knew it was the end.

The doctor there saw how distressed Ginger was and took her right in. Put on oxygen because of her breathing. Ginger had fluids in her lungs which was making it hard for her to breathe. Poor Ginger was in the midst of heart failure and dying. Doctor didn't think she would live the night. She had to be put down. Ginger was going to be 15 years old in 3.5 months. The doctor prep Ginger for euthanasia. She was given a shot to calm her which didn't work, then a stronger shot to calm her more. Doctor then put the cat in a blanket and let me hold her. I think she was already dead before the lethal doze was administered. She will be missed.

Ginger was cremated at the Abbey Glen Pet Memorial Park Crematory on January 3, 2023 and family has her ashes.

Died 8:12 p.m. from heart failure & fluid in lungs. It came so quick just like Sam the cat.

Ginger aged 14 years, 8 months, 16 days
(In human years Ginger would have been 75 years old)
