Sylvan was born to Joseph W and Carrie Thorsen Andersen. He graduated from high school in Hyrum, UT, attended one year at the University of Utah, and one more year at Utah State College. He married Bessie May McAffee on May 10, 1926, at Challis, ID. They lived in Hyrum for a year, then moved to the Lost River Valley of Idaho, where they lived in the Lost River area, and he ranched and ran cattle. They moved to Blackfoot in 1937, where they farmed until 1966, when they retired and moved into the city of Blackfoot. They had five children, Sylvan, Jr., John, Erma, Naoma, and Gloria, who died in infancy. Sylvan passed away at the Carson Nursing Home in Rigby.
