Dr. Westerbeck Dies; Formed Mission Doctors

Dr. Charles Westerbeck, 63, died at Daniel Freeman Hospital in Inglewood last Wednesday, Oct. 29, after a long illness.

He was on the staff of both Daniel Freeman Hospital and Centinella Hospital, and he had been the personal physician for many priests and sisters.

A native of Los Angeles, he attended St. John the Evangelist grammar school and Mt. Carmel High School.

Before going to medical school he attended Loyola University. In 1947 he graduated from St. Louis University Medical School and began his practice as a physician.

In conjunction with the late Msgr. Anthony Brouwers and Dr. Barney McFarland, Dr. Westerbeck was instrumental in the initial organizing of the Mission Doctors Association, which carries on a program of placement and support of Catholic doctors in mission lands.

In addition to his wife, Mary Kay, Dr. Westerbeck leaves his mother, Mrs. Marie Westerbeck of Van Nuys, 10 children and 10 grandchildren.

Mass of the Ressurrection was celebrated for Dr. Westerbeck on All Souls Day in St. Bridget of Sweden Church, Van Nuys.

Father Robert Jabro, pastor, has known Dr. Westerbeck for over 30 years and paid tribute to him for inspiring him to become a priest.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Nov. 3 at St. Andrew's Priory in Valyermo

Since he had been a Benedictine Oblate for many years he was buried in the monastic cemetery.

Father John Borgerdine, Prior of St. Andrew's characterized Dr. Westerbeck as one having unlimited energy in doing God's will.

WHEREAS, Charles W. Westerbeck, MD was a dedicated member of the Los Angeles County Medical Association for thirty years; and

WHEREAS, Doctor Westerbeck served his patients and profession with understanding and compassion; and

WHEREAS, he served his country as an expert in aviation medicine, practicing as a flight surgeon and major in the United States Air Force; and

WHEREAS, Charley Westerbeck was well known for combining his medical practice with a deep spiritual commitment for his patients, contributing as an organizer and first president in 1958 of the Mission Doctors Association, and contributing much in time and effort to his church; and

WHEREAS, he served in numerous capacities in his hospitals, as President of Los Angeles County Medical Association Centinela Valley District 15, as a Corporate Member of Blue Shield of California, and as a California Medical Associate Delegate; and

WHEREAS, Doctor Westerbeck with his wife, Mary Kathryn, have produced ten find children from a loving marriage; now therefore be it

RESOLVED: That the California Medical Association recognize and applaud the dedication and contribution of Charles W. Westerbeck, MD to his patients and his profession; and, be it further

RESOLVED: That this recognition be shared with is wife and family, along with the sorrow his colleagues feel over his untimely death.
