Cynthia was the daughter of Howell Freeland and Zilpha Campbell who moved from Frankin County, Georgia, and the family appeared in the 1850 Polk County, Tennessee census with children Mary Isabella, Artemissa, Anna Caroline, Rachel Evaline, Cynthia and Jeremiah. Other children were John Martin, Henry, and Zilpha Elizabeth.

Cynthia married Renaugh Watts and they moved to Morgan County, Tennessee and on to Scott County where they had purchased 170 acres of land on Black Wolf Creek. Their children were William Howell, Joseph Campbell, Columbus Melton (died young), Raumma Elizabeth (died young), Richard Christenbury, Jeremiah Edward, and George Renaugh.
