Colgate Rice Dennis

March 13, 1919 – January 31, 2008

Colgate Rice Dennis, 88 of Milano, passed away on Thursday, January 31, 2008 at his home. He was born on March 13, 1919 to Rice and Zelpha (Hunley) Dennis in Orange, Texas. He was the Salutatorian of the 1938 senior class at Milano High School and served in the US Navy during World War II. He was a Chief Petty Officer assigned to the Manila Bay.

Colgate married Lillie Alma Davenport on September 22, 1941 in the First Baptist Church in Milano and worked as the Chief engineer at the Rice Hotel laundry in Houston.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years; his brother Robert Dennis and a sister, Opal McKnight. He is survived by his son Tommy L. Dennis and wife Terry of Milano; grandchildren Torry Scott Dennis of Bryan and Tamra Vance and husband Stephen of Milano; great grandsons Hunter, Cody and Blake Vance; and two sisters, Ruby Wagner of Tomball and Fannie McKnight of San Antonio.

A funeral service was held on Sunday, February 3, 2008, at the Phillips and Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale. Burial followed in the Oak Lawn Cemetery in Rockdale, the Rev. Carl Hudson with Meadowbrook Baptist Church presiding. Pall Bearers were Joe Dennis, Dan McKnight, David McKnight, Clarence Davenport, Jr., David Gill and Dalton Owens.

Memorials may be made to the Milano Volunteer Fire Department, the Lucy Hill Patterson Memorial Library in Rockdale or to the Milano Former Student Association.
