Bryson Pioneer Dies Today in Olney Hospital

Mrs. Orton Bennett, Sr., long time resident of Bryson, Texas died at 2:45 p.m. today in the Olney Hamilton Hospital following an illness.

Funeral arrangements are pending, and Morrison Funeral Home of this city will be in charge of funeral arrangements.

Survivors include five sons and two daughters. They are Bruce and B.S. Bennett of Bryson, Orton Bennett, Jr., Boyd and Pearl Bennett, all of Graham; and Mrs. Travis Hill, Bryson, Mrs. Houston Denning, Seymour; 19 grandchildren, and several great grandchildren.

Funeral Rites For Mrs. Bennett Held Saturday.

Funeral services for Mrs. Pauline Elizabeth Bennett, 82, Bryson, Texas, pioneer, were conducted 4 p.m. Saturday in Morrison Funeral Chapel with Rev. Cearley and Minister Base officiating. Burial was in the Center Ridge Cemetery with Morrison Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Bennett died Thursday, Aug. 14, about 2:30 p.m. in the Olney Hamilton Hospital following a long illness.

Born Feb. 9, 1876 in Collin County, Mrs. Bennett was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. W.F. Bottoms.

She married Orton Bennett, Sr. on Jan. 1, 1896 in Jack County, and the couple moved to eastern Young County in 1902.

Survivors are five sons, W.F. Bennett of Bryson, Boyd Bennett, Pearl Bennett, and Orton Bennett,Jr., all of Graham, and Bruce Bennett of Morris, Okla; two daughters, Mrs. Martha Hill, Bryson, and Mrs. Roberta Denning, Seymour; nineteen grandchildren, and twenty-eight great grand children.

Pallbearers were Carl Smith, John Birdwell, Henry Johnson, Elmer Orr, John Shuck, and Travis Brown.

Pauline attended a one room school at Toe Holt Gap - about 3/4 miles Southwest of Center Ridge Cemetery. She went to Jacksboro School and got her certificate to teach. Each morning she cooked breakfast, fixed seven syrup bucket lunches, harnessed the team up and went cross county to teach 3rd and 4th graders at Ross Valley, a one room school where she taught.

As written in Young County, Texas History book - The Bennett Community (also called Top Hole Gap or Toe Holt Gap), was located 10 miles East of Graham, in a gap of the Cement Mountains. It was a cluster of farms, and during 1893 had a one room school. The teacher was Miss Bettie Millikin. Foundations of the old school can be found and a few remnants of he farms, but nothing else remains.
