CHELAN - Joe A. Miessen, 85, Chelan, died Tuesday morning at Regency Manor.

He was born Aug. 2, 1897, at Crystal Bay, Minn., and later moved with his family to Kentucky. The family moved to Brewster in 1903, where he attended school. He also attended Holy Angels Academy in Seattle for five years.

Mr. Miessen was a veteran of World War I, serving in the US Army. Following discharge due to a permanent disability, he moved to Chelan, where he had since made his home.

He was a member of the Catholic Church and American Legion Post No. 108.

Survivors include two sisters, Louise Rothgeb, Wenatchee, and Margaret Reid, Huntington Beach, Calif.

Precht Rose Chapel, Chelan, is in charge of arrangements.

Pvt. Miessen, 18th Co., 20th Engineers,, survived the torpedoing & sinking of the troopship "Tuscania" on 5 February 1918 in the North Channel between Scotland & Ireland by German submarine UB-77. He returned from World War I aboard the "Santa Paula" in May 1919. He listed his brother, Jerry F Miessen, of Lakeside, Washington, as his next-of-kin on both ship passenger rosters.
