Musician. He was an award-winning American jazz musician, who earned five gold records and three Grammy Awards during his career. Born Ramsey Emmanuel Lewis Jr, he began taking piano lessons at an early age and later played with several local ensembles in the Chicago area. He also was a member of a jazz group called the clefs. In the late 1950s, he formed the group Ramsey Lewis Trio and they went on to produce such hits as "The In Crowd," which reached #2 on the R&B Chart and #5 on the Hot 100 in 1965; "Hang On Sloopy," and "Wade in the Water." By 1966, he was considered the top jazz pianist in the country. Crossing over, his music had great appeal to non-jazz music fans. He recorded eighty albums and earn five gold records and three Grammy Awards during a career that spanned eight decades. His music brought him various other awards and honors during his career. He later hosted both a radio and television show on the legends of jazz.
