"Weaverville Civic Leader Miller Dead --- Weaverville --- Elvin "Hap" Miller, Weaverville's unofficial mayor and longtime civic leader died at home Friday.

"Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the town civil defense hall.

"Visitation will be held 7-9 p.m. Sunday evening at McDonald-Files Chapel in Weaverville, Trinity Masonic Lodge No. 7 and Judge John Loomis will officiate at the services.

"Miller, 80, was an institution of sorts in Weaverville: Founder of the Weaverville Rotary Club, chief of the town volunteer Fire Department for 40 years and keeper of weather records for use by the media, court system and interested citizens.

"Miller was editor of the Rotary Club's weekly newsletter from 1938 until his death. He also edited the volunteer Fire Department's monthly newsletter, was a Weaverville Elementary School trustee, performed with the Trinity Players and was a member of the Trinity County Historical Society.

"He operated Miller's Auto Center from 1935 until his retirement seven years ago. He worked as a machinist, mechanic and bell maker.

"Residents claimed Miller was always there to help when needed.

"He was born Sept. 25, 1906, on a homestead between Blackwell and Ponca City, Okla. He moved to Weaverville in 1935.

"Miller is survived by his wife, Mildred; sons Bradford and Hal of Weaverville; daughter Jenith Stodolski of Montrose, Colo.; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

"He will be buried in the family lot at Weaverville Masonic Cemetery."
