Deceased Name: William Eugene 'Pete' Anno Sr.
William Eugene "Pete" Anno Sr., 68, Topeka, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 2004, in a Deadwood, S.D., hospital.

He was born March 14, 1936, in Topeka, the son of Albert and Ethel Mitchell Anno. He graduated from Highland Park High School in 1954 and served in the Navy from 1954 to 1958. He was stationed in Norfolk, Va., and Charleston, S.C. Following his discharge, he worked for M. Katch & Co. for a few years before starting work for ABF Truck Lines, where he retired in 1995.

He was a member of the Teamsters, a life member of American Legion Topeka North Post No. 400 and had been a super modified race driver.

He married Mercedes Smiltneek in 1955. They were legally separated.

Survivors include his companion, Betty Clinton, of the home; four sons, Albert Edward "Pete" Anno, Ricky Lee Anno and wife, Kim, Michael Anthony Anno, all of Topeka, and Danny Joe Anno and wife, Linda, Hoyt; a daughter-in-law, Debbie Moffett Anno, Tempe, Ariz.; a sister, Dixie Ozenbaugh, Scranton; and three grandchildren, Sarah, Jeffrey and Katie Anno.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, two sisters, and a son, William E. Anno Jr., on Oct. 9, 1997.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel with interment in Emmanuel Cemetery southeast of Topeka.

Mr. Anno will lie in state after 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
