SAN ANGELO Jean McCandless Stone Britt was born Oct. 2, 1921, in Cleveland, Okla., to Velma and Bryce McCandless. She grew up in Roswell, N.M., Dallas and Houston, Texas. In her youth, she was an accomplished equestrian. She later attended and graduated from Hartridge School in Plainfield, N.J., and from the University of Texas. At the university, she was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority, voted most beautiful by a fraternity, and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. On March 21, 1943, Jean married Hugh Lamar "Stoney" Stone Jr. Early in their marriage, they lived in Ecuador and Paraguay, where Stoney served in intelligence during the war. Later, they moved to New Orleans while Stoney attended Tulane Law School. After law school, they moved to Houston. They lived in Houston for over 20 years, and that is where they raised their two children. She was a devoted mother and was an active member of the Houston Junior League. On Stoney's retirement, they moved to San Angelo to be near family. She was a member of the Twentieth Century Club and a regular player at the San Angelo Duplicate Bridge Club. They enjoyed retirement and traveled extensively. After the deaths of both her father and husband, Jean took care of her mother and devoted many years of her life to her mother's care. Both Jean and her mother enjoyed traveling and playing bridge together. It was on one of their trips that Jean met WILLIAM "BILL" BRITT. Jean married Bill in 1989. In the usual tradition, Bill and Jean continued to care for Jean's mother, to play bridge and to travel. Jean is survived by her husband, Bill of San Angelo; her son, Hugh Lamar Stone III, and wife Bitsy of San Angelo; her daughter, Bryce Stone Thieman, and husband Mark of San Angelo; a stepson, Bill Britt Jr., and wife Nancy of Anchorage, Alaska; and a stepdaughter-in-law, Stephanie Britt of Plano, Texas. Grandchildren include Hugh Lamar Stone IV and wife Francesca of Memphis, Tenn., Preston McCandless Stone and wife Sarah of Georgetown, Texas, Joseph Stone Thieman and Bryce Drew Thieman, both of San Angelo, Ashley Phillips of Dallas, Texas, Bryan Britt of Anchorage, Alaska, and J,W. Britt and Ricky Britt, both of Plano, Texas; and one great-grandchild, Hugh Lamar Stone V. A special thanks to Jean's wonderful caregivers for their love, devotion and excellent care. They were responsible for making Jean's last few years pleasant and comfortable. The family would also like to thank Lisa for keeping Jean beautiful. There will be a memorial service at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 16, at Emmanuel Episcopal Church. Memorials may be made to Hospice of San Angelo, Emmanuel Episcopal Church, First Presbyterian Church or to a favorite charity.
