James "Donald" Nichols was born on the 8th of November 1929 in the city of Rome, Floyd County Georgia. He is the son of James "Curtis" Nichols and Lucille Cornelia Shiflett. He moved to Polk County Georgia with his parents in 1931 and settled down in the Lake Creek community. He would live out his life as a life long citizen of Lake Creek in Polk Country Georgia. At an early age Donald fell in love with baseball. He would continue to play for many years until work and family life made it difficult to continue. Even then Donald dedicated many years to coaching baseball as apart of the Cedartown Little League. He would also serve as the Cedartown Little League president for a number of years. An avid fisherman and hunter, Donald loved the outdoors be it on the lake or in the field hunting birds or rabbits. He had a passion for automobiles and was widely know for his skills with building them. He worked for over 37 years with the General Electric Corporation of Rome Georgia building electric power transformers. The nickname "Tater Bug" was given to him by his childhood friends of Lake Creek which would stick with him the rest of his life. He would meet and then marry Mildred Teems in a double marriage ceremony with his cousin Edward Shiflett and his wife Helen in Buchanan Georgia in June of 1949. Donald was a graduate of Cedartown High School in the class of 1948.

Mr. James Donald Nichols, 74, of the Lake Creek Community, Cedartown, died Monday, Aug. 23, 2004. A native of Polk County, he was born Nov. 8, 1929, son of the late James Curtis and Lucile Cornelia Nichols. He lived most of his life in Polk County where he was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church. Mr. Nichols was employed by General Electric of Rome, where he retired after thirty-seven years. He was a member of the Caledonia Lodge #121. Mr. Nichols had twenty-five years of service with the Cedartown Little League. He is preceded in death by his son, Clifton Dennis Nichols and two brothers, Eugene and William Howard Nichols. Survivors include his wife Mildred T. Nichols; three daughters, Judy M. Hutto, Wanda J. Looney and Brenda C. Smith; a son, Jerry D. Nichols; seven grandchildren and several great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at noon on Wednesday in the sanctuary of the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church. The Rev. Larry Russell and Rev. Linda Smith officiated as well as a life-long friend, Ted Broadway. Interment followed in the Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. The following were asked to serve as pallbearers: Capt. Jamie D. Allen, Jason D. Nichols, Josh Nichols, Cory Smith, Jake Smith and Daniel G. Barber. Honorary pallbearers included Ted Broadway, Al Gormley, Dewey, Charles, Wallace and Edward Shiflett, Cary Cox and Billy Mitchell. The Oaknoll Chapel of Jennings Funeral Home of 2542 Shorter Ave., Rome, had charge of the arrangements.
