Charity Bates Swarthout Shepherd – A True Pioneer!

Charity was born in Addison Vermont. She married Phillip Swarthout in 1815. They had 7 children. They became members of the Mormon Church in 1830. In 1833, because of religious persecution in Ohio, they made plans to join other members of the church and travel to Clay County, Missouri. They were in the process of leaving when Charity's husband, Philip, died of cholera, leaving her a widow with this large family. She migrated to Missouri with the help of her children. The oldest was 16 years old. In Missouri she met a widower, Samuel Shepherd, with 6 children of his own. They had one additional child of their own. Forced to move they went to Nauvoo, Illinois and then were in the second wagon train to Salt Lake arriving there in 1847. In 1851, they were asked to move to Southern California and after a difficult trip she and her husband were in the founding members of the City of San Bernardino.
