Samuel Shepherd A True Pioneer and American Hero

Samuel Shepherd was born November 10, 1790 at Castleton, Vermont. Samuel was a soldier in the War of 1812 and fought at the Battle of Tippecanoe under General William Henry Harrison. He was a prisoner at Quebec for 7 months. His father, David Shepherd, served in the American Revolution and fought in the Battle of Bennington with General Stark. Samuel's first wife was Roxy Lana Ray. They were married on
December 4, 1820. They had eight children. Forced by religious persecution they moved to Missouri but Roxy died on the trip leaving Samuel with 6 children. He met and married Charity Bates Swarthout who had 7 children of her own. They were forced to move again to Illinois and again, in 1847 they were on the second wagon train to Salt Lake. In 1851 he was asked to move his family to Southern California and was one of the founding fathers of the City of San Bernardino.

Submitted for Ardyn Fredericksen - a great, great, great granddaughter of Sameul's wife Charity.
