On Wednesday (August 23) of this week, at the old settlers picnic at Caldwell, an accident occurred which cost the life of one of the most popular young men of the county. A horse race was being run and Melvin McClenahan was one of the judges of the finish. One of the horses flew the track directly at the outcome and ran over him, inflicting injuries from which he died, not regaining consciousness prior to his death, which occurred at five o'clock yesterday (August 24) morning. Dr. Miller was summoned, but the injuries were so severe that the sufferer could not even be roused. Melvin was an excellent, amiable and energetic young man, and his people all have general condolences, including his bereaved wife, who is left with a young child to care for. He was foreman of the Peters ranch of the Swan Land and Cattle company. The funeral is being held this afternoon, conducted by Elder E. D. Eubank of this city. A large number of the deceased's friends from outside of town are here this afternoon, and the funeral is being attended by a large concourse of people who desire to pay the last sad tribute to a young man who has been held in such high esteem. The wife is almost crazed with grief by reason of her terrible bereavement. # # # Gering Courier, Friday August 25, 1899 page four
