Manuel (Mel) Federico Corona was born January, 9, 1930 in Blythe, CA and passed peacefully in his sleep on May 29, 2022 with his partner Josephine (Jo) by his side. Mel lived a full and active life until taking a fall in January from which he was not able to recover. He is predeceased by his parents, Ramon and Nieves, and siblings Beatrice, Jack, Toby, Ernie, Ofelia (Artana), Arthur and Alfred. He is survived by Josephine Amato, siblings Ruth (Martinez), Gloria (Ballard), Norma (Quackenbush), Alice (Jimenez) and Chuck, along with many nieces and nephews.

In the mid 1940's, Mel moved with his parents to Gilroy. He graduated from Gilroy High School in 1948 where he played multiple sports and lettered in football and swimming.

Mel served in the National Guard. In his younger years, he worked for the California Department of Forestry. His love of driving led him to a long career as a coach operator (badge #33) with Valley Transit Authority (VTA). He retired in 1995.

After retirement, one of his favorite pastimes was driving and sightseeing with his brother, Chuck. He also enjoyed gardening, reading and attending special family occasions. A devoted family member, he was Uncle Manuel to many nieces & nephews and loving godfather to Randi and Robyn Jimenez.

Mel will be missed by many and remembered as always having a smile on his face.

Family and friends are invited to a memorial service on Wed, June 8. Chapel opens at 9:30 and service begins at 10:30 am at the Habing Family Funeral Home, 129 4th Street, Gilroy, CA 95020. Burial to follow at St. Mary's Cemetery.
