Patrick was the only son of Patrick Henry and Rosella Vinson Simpson. He enlisted in the United States Army at 21, and landed at Normandy on June 6, 1944. Like thousands of other American servicemen, he served in the European Theatre of Operations. During his service, he saw action as a transportation assistant in the Medical Corps in England, France and Germany. Many of the photographs that he brought home document the Allies push toward victory across the European continent—battles at "the Bulge", the landing on "D Day", cleaning up Bastogne, and the final sweep across West Germany to Berlin.
He married Margaret Elizabeth Ferando, daughter of Joseph and Alice Vericker Ferando, on October 19, 1946, at St. Barbara Catholic Church, in Witt, Illinois. They had 2 children: James Patrick (b. 1954) and Thomas Edward (b. 1955).
Patrick and Margaret celebrated fifty years of marriage on October 19, 1996. Patrick James worked in the transportation field for over fifty years. He was instrumental in building the athletic association at St. Sebastian Catholic Church, in North St. Louis County, and seeing its growth as one of the largest in the St. Louis area during the 70s. He spent over forty years in the Boy Scouts and received many awards for his service and dedication to the growing youth of America.
On March 15, 2002, Patrick James Simpson passed away. He was buried with full military honors at the National Cemetery at Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis—a fitting tribute to a man who spent his life in the service of others. Margaret died only 10 months later and is buried with Patrick at JB.
