Jane Clarissa Walton was a daughter of Thomas Walton (1782-1850) and his wife Martha Matilda McEntyre (1784-1868) of Creekside Plantation, Morganton, North Carolina. In 1828, she married James Washington Patton (1803-1861). Jane and James had four sons, James Alfred Patton (1830-1864), Thomas Walton Patton (1831-1840), William Augustus Patton (1835-1863), and John G. Patton (c. 1836-?).
