Born Henry Patterson, he was raised in Belfast, Ireland and following service with the Royal Horse Guards, he worked as a laborer with the circus, a truck driver and a factory worked prior to attending the University of London from where he received degrees in Sociology, Social Psychology and Economics. In 1959, his first book "Sand Wind from the Sea" was published and during the course of his career, he wrote over 30 novels.
