Corporal, 2e Bataillon, Royal 22e Régiment (Van Doos), based in Valcartier, Québec. Aged 31, he was from Rimouski, QC and serving with the Canadian contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.
He and WO Hani Massouh were killed when their armoured vehicle rolled over about 40 kilometres southwest of Kandahar City in the Zhari district. Both were in the turret of a LAV-III as it made a tactical move across rugged, muddy terrain. Military spokesmen said the incident was unrelated to enemy action.
Cpl Labbé had six years service with the Canadian Forces and previously deployed in 2002 to Bosnia and Herzegovina in the former Yugoslavia. He was remembered for his commitment, perseverance and courage. He is survived by his parents Normand Labbé and Gertrude Hupé, his sister Judith, grandfather Jean-Charles Hupé, and extended family.
Seventy-six soldiers and one diplomat have now died since Canada first sent troops to Afghanistan in 2002.
Funeral service held on January 16, 2008 in the Church of St-Robert in Rimouski with interment at Jardins Commémoratifs Saint-Germain.
