Mahala was the third wife of John Newton Hahn. By the time John married Mahaly, he was the father of six living children. He had also fathered twin daughters by his first wife, Effie L. Scott Hahn. The twins were stillborn, and Effie died shortly thereafter. John then married Elizabeth "Lizzie" Davoult in 1883. John and Lizzie had six children: William Francis Marion (born 13 Nov 1883, died Jan 1970); Effie Elizabeth (born 10 Dec 1884, died 3 Sep 1964); Martha Jane (born 3 Mar 1886, died 15 Jan 1976); George Franklin (born 5 Mar 1886, died 5 Aug 1974); Henry Isaac "Ike" (born 2 Mar 1888, died 17 May 1976); and David Stanford (born 12 Mar 1889, died 4 Feb 1972).

John, then, married Mahala Odessa Pearce on 10 June 1891 in Indian Territory, Oklahoma. Mahala was 18 years old and found it very difficult to deal with six young children. Some of the children were already being cared for by the DaVault and Pearce families.

John and Mahala had eleven children: Emanuel Pinkney (born 11 Dec 1891, died 24 Nov 1979), John Hansford (born 20 Jan 1893, died May 1973), James Columbus (born 4 Jan 1895, died 26 Aug 1986), Ina Ann (born 11 Sep 1896, died 22 Nov 1968), Alvin Luther (born 11 Feb 1898, died 5 Dec 1944), Flora Corene (born 12 Mar 1900, died 3 Mar 1980), Dollie Rose (17 Feb 1902, died 28 Feb 1902), Ollie May (born 17 Feb 1902, died 26 Dec 1985), Willis Newton (born 3 Apr 1904, died 20 Nov 1986 ... this was my birth father's father), Thomas Jefferson (born Jun 1907, died Jan 1908), and Bonnie Dean (born 5 Jul 1910, died 6 May 1994).
