John Riley Kirk was born in Jefferson county, Iowa, August 17 1851. He departed this life April 9, 1925 at the age of 73 years, 7 months and 22 days.


He was married February 8, 1874 to Mary Ann Carroll, and to this union nine children were born to bless their home. One son and one daughter preceded him in death. Those left mourn his loss are his wife and seven children as follows: Mrs. Clara Fehrenback and Mrs. Lucy Brader, Sherman City, Mrs. Minnie Threewitt, Cherokee, Kans., Charles Kirk, McCune, Kans, Lafe Kirk, Cassville, Mo., Vern Kirk Dallas, Tex. And Arthur Kirk, Coffeyville, Kansas., also four brothers, Henry, Joe and Wm. Kirk, Columbus, Kans. and Frank of Picher, Oklahoma.; one sister, Mrs. Clara Heater of Victor, Mont., 33 grandchildren and several great grandchildren.


Mr. Kirk was a pioneer settler of Cherokee County emigrating to Kansas in the fall of 1879. He moved to Sherman in 1900 and has since made his home here.


He was a most kind and loving husband and father.


One of his characteristics was the courteous and pleasant manner in which he almost invariably greeted his fellowmen.

The funeral was held in the church at Sherman. Rev. Mr. Cloninger of Labette City officiated and the remains were interred in the Sherman city Cemetery.


The relatives expressed themselves as being grateful to their many friends and neighbors for the sympathy and aid rendered for the beautiful ad profuse floral offerings and, more especially did they express their thanks for the impressive sermon in behalf of their sad bereavement in the death of the loving husband and father. 


Those present from a distance were: Henry Kirk and son, Henry, Jr., Joe Kirk and wife and Wm. Kirk and wife and daughter of Columbus; Frank Kirk, wife and daughter of Picher, Oklahoma; D.M. Carroll of Liberty, Mo.; Claude Carroll Parsons, Kans; Mrs. C.T. Smith, Columbus, Kans.; Herman Tygart, Parsons; Mrs. Zelma Shaw, Mr. Hatzfield and Walter White, Oswego; Mr. And Mrs. Mansfield and son; Chas. Mansfield and wife and Mr. And Mrs. Forest Harley, McCune Kans.
