The son of Rev. Hiram J and Sarah Jane "Sadie" Murphy Jones. Herb was the eldest of ten children. He enlisted in the Navy where he spent time aboard the USS Texas, based outside of Charleston, South Carolina according to the 1910 military census. He was a mechanic in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. When his wife Anna passed away he brought his two daughters out to California to be close to his parents. Herb like to hunt.
