Musician. Best-known for as the gravelly-voiced lead singer of the Seattle-based Grunge band, Screaming Trees. Born in Ellensburg, Washington, he served as the group's original drummer before switching to vocals before the release of their first extended play (EP) in 1986. In 1991, the band released their first major album, Uncle Anesthesia which garnered airplay on alternative stations in the Pacific Northwest. The following year, the album Sweet Oblivion was released, spawning the hit singles, "Nearly Lost You," "Dollar Bill," and "Shadow of the Season." Heavy radio play catapulted the band into the limelight of the burgeoning grunge scene. In addition to his work with the Screaming Trees, he released twelve solo albums and collaborated with a number of other artists and groups. In 1995, he joined with fellow grunge rockers Layne Staley of Alice in Chains (AIC) and Mike McCready of Pearl Jam to form the short lived supergroup, Mad Season. As a member of Queens of the Stone Age (QOTSA), he provided vocals for the group's first three albums before departing due to exhaustion. In addition to his musical career, he was also a published author, having penned two autobiographies and a book of lyrics from his compositions.
