Sweden's most well known cenotaph is outdoors at the foot of the tower at Stockholm City Hall. It was included in the original architecture of the great building which was finished in 1923. It was created for Duke Birger (Jarl) of Sweden, one of the most noted persons in Sweden's early history, considered the founder of the city. The intention was that his remains would be moved here, but the local parish in Vadstena refused to release them so the grand sarcophagus has remained empty.
