On September 10, 1943, he was on the crew of the B-17F #42-4621 during a training flight based out of the Alexandria Air Base in Louisiana. They collided in mid-air with another B-17 (42-6031) about forty miles southeast of Galveston, Texas, over the Gulf of Mexico. There were eleven men on each plane, and there were no survivors. No bodies were ever recovered.

Killed when U.S. Army Air Corps B-17F Flying Fortress #42-6031 collided mid air with B-17F #42-4621 over the Gulf of Mexico, 45 miles southeast of Galveston, Texas, while on a training flight out of the Alexandria, Louisiana, Army Airfield. Twenty-one other Army servicemembers also perished.
