At the time of his death William Henry "Dude" Carney Jr. was a Petty Officer Second Class serving his country during WWII in the United States Navy as a Gunner's Mate. He was killed in action at sea when the ship on which he served, USS LST-523, was sunk by a mine off the coast of Normandy, France, on Wednesday, June 19, 1944.
