Rosa (Madden) Faulk (1918 - 2010)
On Feb. 2, 2010, our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Rosa Madden Faulk, broke the bonds of this earth to be carried to the arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
She was born on Sept. 12, 1918, in Baker, Fla., to Dewey E. Madden and Leila Helms Madden. Mrs. Faulk lived most of her life in Okaloosa County, in Crestview, Fla. She traveled overseas with her husband, Lowell A. Faulk, who served in the Air Force for 27 years. She was a telephone operator and schoolteacher, teaching at a time when the one room schoolhouse held grades one through six. Mom enjoyed teaching and many of her former students still kept in touch with her. Mom loved growing flowers, and before spring came around you could find her digging, getting the ground ready for her flowers. Her yard was always ablaze with beautiful colors.
Her passion in life was cooking, and everyone loved gathering around her table for the best of her specials - dumplings, biscuits, chicken and dressing, to name a few. Her nieces were so impressed with her culinary talents, they made a cookbook called "Rosa Belle's Recipe Book," which thrilled her!
Above all else, she loved her family. In her latter days, when she could not sleep, she shared with her daughters that she named each person in her family by name and prayed for them, until her memory began to fade, but she continued to pray.
Mrs. Faulk was preceded in death by her parents, Dewey and Lela Madden; her husband, Lowell A. Faulk; a brother, Judge Richmond Helms; and three sisters, Katie Kennedy, Cennie Gainey and Iris Madden Hylton.
Mrs. Faulk is survived by two daughters, Lana Belle Faulk, and Patricia Ates and husband Luther Ates; two grandchildren, Scott Ates and wife Amanda, and Terri Jo Mathews and husband Larry Mathews; six great-grandchildren, Haley Anne Ates, Luther Allen Ates II (Luke), Calan W. Ates, Megan Nicole Mathews, Joel Allen Mathews and Anna Leim Mathews; two brothers, Jerry Madden and wife Sue, and Dewey Madden Jr. and wife Wilma; sister, Lela Lobingier and husband Dennis; numerous nieces and nephews; many loving friends; and special neighbor, Jeannie Thomas, who was her catfishing buddy.
A visitation will be held two hours prior to the funeral service, which commences at 2 p.m. Feb. 5, at New Beginnings Church, located on Highway 90 West in Crestview.
Pallbearers are Kevin Madden, David King, Bryan King, Edward Williams, Jody Helms and Bo Carter. Honorary pallbearers are her nephews and the men of New Beginnings Church.
Flowers are accepted or donations can be made to Shockly Springs Baptist Church, 6935 Old River Road, Baker, FL 32531; or to New Beginnings Church.
A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Wayne Campbell, and Flo and Joan, as well as the special angels at the Parthenon, Brenda, Nickie, Stacy, Peggy and Kathy.
Arrangements are entrusted to Whitehurst Powell Funeral Home in Crestview. Guest register and condolences are available online at www.whitehurstpowellfuneralhome.com.
