Director. He started as an editor at the Denham Studios in the 1930s. Later in the 1940s he went to work for the Ealing Studios where he made his directorial debut in 1944. In the post-war years he became famous for his "Ealing Comedies". In the early 60s he went to Hollywood to direct "The Birdman of Alcatraz" but after a serious quarrel with actor Burt Lancaster he was fired. He later worked as the TV director of "Space 1999". In 1988, at age 78 he made his "come-back" with the enormously successful comedy "A Fish Called Wanda". It proved to be his swansong and he spent a happy retirement fishing in Scotland and Wales.
