Heiress and Socialite Nancy "Trink" Deere Wiman Carter Wakeman Gardiner was a philanthropist and socialite gained notoriety by shooting her husband. She was a native of New London, CT and great-granddaughter of tractor tycoon John Deere. She created the Wakeman Award. The award was named after her husband William Thomson Wakeman, Jr. In 1986 she established a $1 million endownment at Duke University for neuroscience. She was convicted of aggravated assault and was sentenced to five years' probabtion. During her appeal she contributed $1,000 to the campaign of a judge running for the Florida Suprene Court. The judge was on the panel that reveresed her conviction.
