Author. She is recognized as one of the great mystery-story writers of the 20th century, often being compared to Dame Agatha Christie. Besides being an English mystery author, she published short story collections, essays and poetry, was a translator, was a playwright for mainly radio performances, and an author of non-fiction religious books. Her faith played a large role in her life decisions. In her 14 crime novels, she was the creator of "Lord Peter Wimsey," an English aristocrat and amateur sleuth, and his manservant "Bunter" and their multi-plot adventures during the years between the two World Wars. Her "Lord Peter Wimsey" was adapted to a television series. She contributed to the "Oxford Poetry" in the 1917, 1918, and 1919 editions. She translated Dante's "Divine Comedy." Born the only child of the Rev. Henry Sayers, she attended on a scholarship Somerville College in Oxford, graduating in 1915 with first class honors in modern languages, before finding employment as a teacher, in publishing and for nine years, in advertisement. Women were not awarded degrees from Oxford in 1915, but she was among the first to receive a degree when the position changed a few years later and earned a MA in 1920. She gave birth to a son in 1924 from a relationship. In 1926 she married Arthur Fleming, a journalist 12 years her senior and the couple adopted her son. She was a churchwarden at St. Anne's, and although the church was nearly destroyed with bombings during World War II, she wanted to be buried there. Her body was cremated at Golders Green Crematorium in London. Her ashes are interred beneath the tower, which was left standing after the bombing. Her home is marked with the English Heritage Blue Plaque and a full statue of her was erected across the street from her home.
