First Lady of South Carolina from 1947 to 1951
She was a 1947 graduate of Winthrop College (now University) in Rock Hill, SC, York County. She was married in the Governor's Mansion in Columbia, SC, Richland County on November 7, 1947. She died from a brain tumor after diagnosis in September 1959 dying 5 months later at The National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, during her second surgery attempt.
Jean did not have a middle name; named for her mother's double cousin, Jean Griffin Murray, wife of Thomas Pinckney Murray
Every Friday after Aunt Jean died, my grandparents drove to Aiken to her grave. (This information from my mother)
Note: Large headstone moved to Edgefield after the death of Strom. Unfortunately, was never replaced with a simpler headstone as promised by Thurmond Family; Also, she did not die in Washington, DC: incorrectly stated on marker
