Dale W. Clapshaw, 84, a resident of the Forest Grove community, died Wednesday morning, May 23, 2007 at his home.
A Celebration of Dale's Life will be held on Friday, June 1, 2007 at 2:00 PM at the Forest Grove Elks Lodge B.P.O.E. #2440, 2810 Pacific Avenue in Forest Grove. Private Family Graveside Services will be held at the Hillside Cemetery in Forest Grove. Flag Honor Presentation will be under the direction of the American Legion Washington Post #2 in Forest Grove.
DALE WILBUR CLAPSHAW was born August 20, 1922 in Forest Grove, Oregon, the son of Wilbur Clapshaw and Louise (Donovan) Clapshaw. He was raised in the Hillside District of Forest Grove, having attended Hillside Grade School and graduating from Forest Grove High School
He was a Veteran of World War II, having joined the United States Army on October 30, 1942. Dale served for four years as a Military Policeman with the 761st MP BN until receiving his Honorable Discharge on March 24, 1946.
Dale was united in marriage to Frances P. "Betty" (Poe) Frye on May 4, 1959 in Stevenson, Washington. Following their marriage they made their home in Klamath Falls, Gaston, and Cornelius before returning to the Forest Grove community. Dale and Betty celebrated their 48th Wedding Anniversary this past May.
Over the years, Dale had worked in the timber industry in Roseburg, Oregon before he began as a long haul truck driver, first for Noble Craft and then for Herrin Plywood Company. For several years, Dale worked in Yakutat, Alaska hauling logs for the Valentine Logging Company. While living in Gaston, Dale farmed his acreage, having harvested filberts, walnuts, cherries, strawberries, oats, and barley, as well as raised dairy cows. Prior to his retirement in 1992, Dale worked as the manager at the Hillsboro Landfill.
He was a charter member of the Forest Grove Elks Lodge B.P.O.E. #2440. He served as a Trustee and then as Chairman of the Trustees.
Among his interests, Dale enjoyed hunting, especially in the Blue Mountains and fishing, having taken many trips over the years to Olallie Lake. He was an avid fan of the Seattle Mariners as well as his daughters softball games. Dale also enjoyed working crossword puzzles and playing cards, including pinochle, poker, and pitch. He had a great sense of humor. Over the years, Dale supported a racing program, "Pleasure Racings" with his son, Gary. He had a love for kids and always enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Dale is survived by his wife, Frances P. "Betty" Clapshaw of Forest Grove; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Jerry F. and Laura Frye of Forest Grove, Oregon and Gary D. Clapshaw of Las Vegas, Nevada; five daughters and sons-in-law, Susanne Frye of Aloha, Oregon; Sally L. and Harold Krouth of Gaston, Oregon; Barbara A. Kaston of Newberg, Oregon; Violet C. Rieder of Forest Grove, Oregon; and Marine K. and Mickey McBeth of Carlton, Oregon; and a brother and sister-in-law, Thomas and Pearl Clapshaw of Forest Grove, Oregon.
Also surviving are ten grandchildren and their spouses, Travis Ward of San Antonio, Texas; Tiffany and Steve Reimann of Yamhill, Oregon; Benjamin Rieder of Chicago, Illinois; Valerie and Rod Miller of Poway, California; Alena and Brian Allred of St. George, Utah; Jennifer and Bob Olp of Tacoma, Washington; Aaron and Brandi Frye of Forest Grove, Oregon; Alison Frye of Portland, Oregon; Pete McFarland of Redmond, Oregon and Jason D. Clapshaw of Salem, Oregon; fifteen great-grandchildren; a nephew, Douglas Clapshaw and his wife, Laurie of Forest Grove, Oregon; and a niece, Linda Harrington and her husband, Jim, of Hillsboro, Oregon.
