Max Bendix, 80, original concert-master of the Chicago Symphony orchestra, died yesterday in Michael Reese hospital of a stroke. Mr. Bendix, concert violinist and composer, also had served as concertmaster at the Metropolitan Opera house in New York.
He made his first public appearance as a violin soloist when 8 and three years later played in the orchestra under the direction of the late Theodore Thomas. He was named concert master of the orchestra when it transferred to Chicago in 1891. Later he was named conductor.
Mr. Bendix was the first conductor of the Illinois Symphony orchestra. In recent years, he lived in the Home for Aged Jews, 6140 Drexel blvd., where services will he held at 10 a. m. Tuesday. A daughter, Anyn Joseffer, survives.
