Gordon was one of several children born to Melvin and Mable (Haarstad) Gravgaard, and raised in Temple, North Dakota. His mother taught school, and his father farmed.

Gordy graduated high school in Fargo, ND, and then two years at Concordia College in Moorhead.

Gordy joined the U.S. Navy and served as a Gunners Mate 3rd Class, on the USS El Dorado beginning in 1954. He toured several Pacific ports during his service and was honorably discharged in 1956.

Gordy explored several careers, and chose that of a painting contractor.
Gordy married Patricia Mustonen December 5, 1959 in WestChester, Illinois. Two sons, Scott in 1964 and Kent in 1965 were born to the couple. The sons and his wife all preceded him.

During his working career he was known as an excellent painting contractor, and also owned several painting outlets.
