Funeral services for Mary Louise Alford Holman, 90, were held Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2007, at Colonial Chapel of Cook-Walden Funeral Home in Austin. A graveside service followed at Forest Grove First Christian Church Cemetery between Rockdale and Lexington.
Mrs. Holman died Thursday, Nov. 22.
She was born Aug. 28, 1917, in Milam County to Elmer Riddle Alford and Inez Lucky Alford. Her paternal grandparents, Mode John Alford and Harriett Galbraith Alford, were some of the original settlers of Milam County.
Mrs. Holman was a registered nurse who graduated from Breckenridge School of Nursing in 1938 where she later served as a faculty member. She was supervisor of obstetrics at Breckenridge Hospital where she worked for 37 years.
In addition to her career as a nurse, she was a member of many organizations and won countless awards. She served on the Austin State Hospital's Patient Rights committee for several years.
Mrs. Holman loved Big Bend and went camping there or anywhere else she could go every chance she got. She loved to sing and she loved to dance, especially around a campfire. She enjoyed and was a master at the game of ‘42'. Her heart and home were open to everyone she knew.
On Aug. 25, 1940, she married Henry Holman of Austin.
Mrs. Holman was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Holman; a son, Henry Holman III; a sister, Aline (Alford) Robinson, and a brother, William Edward Alford.
Survivors are a sister Ruth Etherington of Austin; a brother, M.J. Alford of Rockdale; her children, Theron ‘Pat' Holman and wife Ida of Erie, Pennsylvania, Michael Holman and wife Suzanne of Austin, Harriett (Holman) Pallas and husband Spiros of Arlington, Virginia; her grandchildren, Paul Holman and wife Susannah Erler of Austin, Jean Holman of Washington, D.C.,Susan Holman and husband Brian Ashbaugh of Washington, D.C., Ruth Holman of Erie, Pennsylvania; numerous nephew and nieces and countless friends.
In lieu of gifts to worthy causes, Mary Holman always preferred flowers.
