Married on December 7, 1929 to Hildah Marie Hughes.

Roy was raised in Terre Haute, Iowa on a farm, where he lived until Hildah's death. Roy was in the military service for just a few months in 1918. In November 1944 he went to work for the U.S. Government, going to Omaha, Nebraska as a meat inspector for a year. He was transferred to Ottumwa, Iowa and returned to Omaha, Nebraska where he worked for different packing plants. Roy and Hildah had four children of their own. After Hilda died, Lavern and Louisa Butcher took two of the girls and raised them. The son, Donald and daughter Retha stayed with their father and stepmother Mary. Roy and Mary lived in South Omaha, Nebraska.
