GERHARD HENRY NIEMEYER
On Last Friday afternoon, May 6, 1921, at 4:30 o'clock, Gerhard Henry Niemeyer, another one of Guttenberg's pioneer residents and prominent business men was called by death at the age of 68 years, 8 months and 17 days, and after an illness of over a year's duration. Deceased was born at Cincinnati, Ohio, on August 19, 1852, coming to Guttenberg, Iowa, in the year 1855, where he spent the remainder of his life. On June 26, 1877, he was married at Guttenberg to Miss Frances Hoffman.
When a young man he learned the tailor's trade, and later engaged in the tailoring and clothing business here, in which he was successfully engaged until his death, a period of about 50 years. For five years he was engaged in farming in Jefferson township. For a time he was also a mayor of our town and a member of the Board of Education.
Mr. Niemeyer was a man of good judgment in his dealings with his fellow citizens; his motto at all times was "a square deal to all." He was a faithful member of the Catholic church and Sacred Heart Society, and a man, who by his pleasant disposition and unassuming manners commanded the respect and esteem of all those with whom he came in contact. His devotion to his home and family was ideal, and his character was excellent. In his death this community loses one of its most highly respected and worthy citizens.
During his illness he was a patient sufferer, and had not given up hopes for his recovery until called to the Great Beyond by the Angel of Death. All that loving hands could do and medical knowledge could suggest was done for him to ward off death, but all to no avail.
His death is deeply mourned by his wife, two sons, Edward and Oscar Niemeyer, of Guttenberg, two daughters, Mrs. D. S. West, of Bunker, S. D., Mrs. J. G. Heitman, of Dubuque, ten grandchildren and many other relatives and friends, by whom this good man will be sadly missed.
Funeral services were held at St. Mary's Catholic church in this city on Tuesday morning, Rev. J. H. Brinkman officiating. Interment was made in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. That Mr. Niemeyer was held in high regard by all who knew him, was shown by the large number of relatives and friends from far and near in attendance at the funeral.
