Valliant commanded Company "I" of the 22nd Mississippi Infantry Bowen's Brigade. He fought at Shiloh, Farmington & Corinth & was captured in 1863. In 1874 he moved to St. Louis & was elected circuit judge. He was elected to Missouri's Supreme Court as Chief Justice in 1898.
