He was born in Steadman, Oklahoma, and was the son of Winford Finis and Cora (Reece) Sutterfield. He graduated from Stuart High School and then served in the United States Navy from 1943 until 1946 during World War II. He married Myrtle Lee Dunn on July 10, 1943, in Stuart, and after his discharge from the military, they moved to California where he worked on a ranch until 1950. He then returned to McAlester and worked at Oklahoma State Penitentiary until 1957 when he worked as a deputy under Sheriff Doc Pruitt. He then worked as a detective for the McAlester Police Department until 1968, at which time he worked for Rockwell International. In 1972 he again worked in law enforcement under Sheriff J.B. Orr until his retirement in 1988 and began ranching in the Stuart area. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Stuart and a 32nd Degree Masonic member of South McAlester Blue Lodge No. 96. He was a resident of Stuart and passed away at his home at the age of 82. Survivors include his wife, Myrtle Sutterfield, of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Teresa Sutterfield and husband, Danny Cloud, of Stuart, and Marilyn and Roy Arnold, of McAlester; a son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Carol Hammontree, of McAlester. Also, eight grandchildren and spouses, Ronnie Sutterfield, of Stuart, Justin Sutterfield, Lake Ozark, Mo., Jennifer and David Glendenning, Lake Ozark, Mo., Jason and Laura Hammontree, Centerton, Ark., Robert and Ann Hammontree, Springdale, Ark., Jimmy and Kim Arnold, of McAlester, Adam Arnold, of Alderson, and Denise and Sam Rosson, of Wilburton. And, eight great-grandchildren, Emma and Cierra Glendenning, Abby, Ally and Maggie Hammontree, and Tara, Cody and Tanner Arnold; five sisters, and three brothers. He was preceded in death by his parents, Winford and Cora Sutterfield; a son, Ronnie M. Sutterfield, in 1997; a grandson, Lonnie Mack Sutterfield, in 1995, and one brother. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Pryor Cemetery Chapel with the Rev. Tommy Brannon officiating. Burial will be at Pryor Cemetery under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service of McAlester. Pallbearers will be Joe Stone, Gene Heathcock, Roger Davis, Leroy Hutchins, Dale Sutterfield and Danny Heathcock. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the men's Sunday School class of Stuart First Baptist Church.
