Angia never liked her real name and preferred to be called Anna. The spelling of her surname Wallis changed in elementary school documents to Wallace as signed by teachers as she progressed through school graduating from the 8th grade.
She desired more than anything to become a nurse but nursing school cost $50.00. She did not have nor would anyone loan or give 50 dollars to her, so she became the neighborhood "nurse" anyway.
She delivered many babies before the Dr. arrived, he would collect his $25.00 and she would clean up. She pulled pitch forks out of feet. Popped one eye back in place that was dislocated due to blunt force, used coal oil to treat for worms and kept warm wood ashes in ovens at a low temp to keep premature babies warm.
Most often she sat with loved ones and neighbors as they died, many from black lung and other disease. All she could offer was a cool damp cloth and to fan their faces. When she and William were barely first married they took in Anna's orphaned half siblings. This doubled the size of the family immediately.
