Joseph Roberts

Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Graduated from the USMA in 1835. When the Civil War broke out in 1861, he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel of the 4th United States Regular Artillery. He was then made Chief of Artillery for the Department of Virginia's VII Army Corps before entering the Volunteer service as Colonel and commander of the 3rd Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery regiment. When the war ended, he was serving as commander of Fortress Monroe in Hampton Roads, Virginia. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "meritorious and distinguished services during the war". On April 9, 1865 he was brevetted Brigadier General, US Regular Army for "meritorious and distriguished services". He continued in the Regular Army after the war, and retired in 1877 with the rank of Colonel. He was the son-in-law of Brevet Brigadier General Justin Dimick. (bio by: Russ Dodge)
