Margaret Euphemia "Phemie" Jacobs Daniell
Birth: Feb. 20, 1877
Dallas County
Arkansas, USA
Death: Apr. 7, 1965
Dallas County
Arkansas, USA

Mark Twain wrote that the biggest spirits come in small bodies.

Margaret Euphemia was the daughter of John R. and Mary Catherine Barnes Jacobs, the sixth of seven children. When she was only eighteen months old, her father passed away, and her mother turned to her family, who lived on a farm in the Bucksnort community north of Fordyce, for help. Phemie, as she was always called, wed Allen Hansford Daniell, a farmer, on 19 July, 1893, when she was only 15 years old, her youth as a bride nothing unusual for that day and age. Phemie and Allen were together until her death, over 71 years later. She and Allen had eight children, Hugh E., who lived only five years, a baby girl who sadly did not live a day, John J, Ethel Roberta "Bertie", Hezzie C, Dorothy D, Jimmie, and Curtis Lee.

Other families have matriarchs. Ours had a primal force. Phemie was a tiny woman, less than five feet tall, but she had an immense presence. She was a warm, loving person, but there was no backup in her, she was fiercely loyal and she "stuck to her guns", regardless. You could say of her that if you needed to cry, Phemie had a shoulder, and if you needed a swift kick in the rear, she had a foot. Let anybody, kid or adult, misbehave by her lights, and Phemie was right there, correcting the situation as she saw fit. And such lights she had! She knew what was right and insisted on it, simple as that, from everybody, related or otherwise. She was the first to help you if you needed it, but getting in her way was never advisable, she'd go over, around, or through you to get to her goal. Whatever happened, be it the death of a child, taking care of a cantankerous old uncle, unemployment, seeing sons off to war, making sure that everybody stayed fed, clothed and housed during the darkest days of the Great Depression, and all the other things that befell her and hers in her long life, she saw it through, you could depend on her. Nothing frightened her, not poverty, storms, bad men, death, nothing. Her strength was in the Lord and the unconquerable heart He gave her.

Phemie was my great-grandma, and when I was a child she stood hardly any taller than I did, but I remember she gave some mighty big hugs, and my last memory of her is of one of those hugs, delivered, as always, with all of her heart.

Phemie passed away at the age of 88, and is sorely missed by her family and friends. The world became a sadder, less interesting place when she left it, but we are comforted knowing Phemie is with her dear Lord and Savior, and all her loved ones now gone to their eternal home.

Many heartfelt thanks to Debbra for her work on Phemie's memorial!
